¿DONDE ESTAN LOS INMIGRANTES? | WHERE ARE THE MIGRANTS?

Frontera de Beni Enzar
[
The Border at Beni Enzar]

WHERE ARE THE MIGRANTS?

On the night of Sunday (into early on Monday), a small group of migrants tried out of despair to enter Melilla. The attempt took place in the same place as the previous one, at the border at Beni Enzar. According to official statements, no migrants were successful in crossing the border.

Today the local and national press collected the official statements about yesterday’s entry attempt, to distort everything that actually happened: according to them, 39 people have disappeared, there people admitted to hospital didn’t number six, the wounded policemen didn’t number four, and the African were apparently “strongly armed” with sticks and stones.

This is the same border where Subsaharan Africans and Asians pass relatively easily if they pay 2500 or 3000 euro, or if you’re a slave in the smuggling industry, or paying 50 euro if you’re Moroccan – but it becomes impossible and excessively violent if you’re black and poor.

This is reminiscent of the day in 2005 that the tragic events of the Rio Nano took place, during which many tens of African faced the wrath of the Moroccan and Spanish forces and suffered all sorts of abuse, which were denied at first and admitted later; we are faced with similar events, and a denial and falsification of the facts. The Delegation of the Government is outlining a dangerous roadmap that leads to nowhere.

THE 10 ALGERIANS DETAINED IN MÁLAGA ARE NOW IN ALGERIA

The group of ten Algerian migrants who faced reprisals from the Delegation of the Government in Melilla arrived yesterday in Algeria, following their transfer from the Capuchinos detention centre.

Today, some 15 Algerians will appear voluntarily in the Comisaría to return to their country; another similar group will not be able to do so until next week, according to what they’ve been told. There are many detainees in the CETI in Melilla who are asking to return to their places of origin without anyone willing to listen to them; at the same time, there is the repression of any protest movement, resulting in the summary expulsion of key protagonists.

The situation that the Government’s policies are causing in the CETI are catastrophic from a human rights perspective. The five migrants from Marine I whom Spain was obliged to accept remain detained in the CETI; tens of people flee every night out of fear of being arrested and deported; a school is being planned inside the CETI in order to ensure that the children living with their families in the CETI do not have access to the public schools attended by other children; no one listens to requests for voluntary return and people continue to be held for years in the city.

The immigration policies of the Socialist government must dissociate itself from the policy being set in Europe by the far right.
