THE KASHMIRIS’ STRIKE HAS ENDED
The strike maintained by 6 Indian citizens for almost 2 months in the Plaza de España in Melilla can now be considered finished. The Delegate of the Government in Melilla finally met with these six people and they reached an agreement that their files would be studies on an individual basis and that they would try to find a way out of the current situation which has seen them confined in Melilla for over two years in some of their cases.
In Melilla, five migrants from “Marine-1” [Note: a ship carrying 300+ migrants which was stuck off the coast of Mauritania in 2007; some migrants were given health care and then transferred to various detention centres in Spain; others were deported] continue to remain under arrest without any justification. One of them was part of the group which was on hunger strike for these two months and his psychological state is very poor.
We urge the government to free these five people and to free all those detainees who have not been returned to their countries within the prescribed maximum legal period of detention.
