AN ENCOURAGING MEETING WITH THE DELEGATE OF THE GOVERNMENT TO TAKE PLACE TODAY
Just as the migrants on hunger-strike barely have any strength left to stand on their own two feet, they have received notification of a meeting with the new Delegate of the Government, to whom they hope to pass on their requests.
The migrants on hunger-strike, tired of being tricked, do not harbor any illusions about what this notification of a meeting with the Delegation of the Government could mean. Since the start they have sought a real, meaningful solution, such as the previous transfer of another group of migrants to the peninsula, in order to bring to an end the indefinite hunger-strike, which they are currently undertaking to achieve their fair aspirations.
Surprisingly, the night before the reunion there was a feeling of hope in the encampment based on their perception of the new Delegate of the Government as a person. Goyo is known to the migrants and is thought of as a friend who is familiar with the situation they are forced to bear during their long confinement in Melilla’s CETI.
The migrants are aware of the harshness of the immigration laws in force in Spain and across Europe, but they also know that there is the possibility of granting a solution to their catastrophic situation on exceptional and humanitarian grounds (that is, through the law).
Goyo, in our view, has the difficult job of taking a balanced and fair decision that upholds the immigration laws within their specified time-frame; to return migrants irregularly entering Melilla in a way that is safe and is as fast as possible such that they face no further harm. On the other hand, it is to settle the humanitarian situation in the most favorable manner possible of the migrants who have now lived in the city for long periods of time, in some cases exceeding TWO YEARS OF DETENTION.
Only in this way can a period of normality be restored in the midst of all the abnormality of our laws and those enacted by the EU on this subject.
